Welcome to this month’s newsletter, shining a light on some of the big issues in the Bay. There is also an invite to a meeting we're holding to help tackle crime in the town, taking place this coming Tuesday evening. So please read on!
A Rubbish Service?
We know that the smooth running of essential front-line services is your top priority for Canterbury City Council. That’s why as your local Conservative team we are getting very concerned about the performance of Canenco, the Council-owned company which runs bin collection, street-cleaning and grounds maintenance across Herne Bay and the district.
With Canenco’s costs increasing and service standards in decline, local taxpayers are losing out twice-over, so this month we delivered a hard-hitting message to the Labour/Liberal coalition at Scrutiny Committee demanding action. We hear more and more stories from residents about problems with bins and street-cleaning, with people rightly feeling they are getting less service for more money
Read more here on our demands for restoring service levels and cost control. We shall keep you up-to-date on this critical matter.
May’s Election Results
What started as a protest vote against the Government’s policies on the Winter Fuel Allowance and immigration, turned into a surge of support for ‘none of the above’ and many experienced councillors losing their Kent County Council seats on May 1st.
I was one of those affected and it is with great regret that I no longer serve residents of Herne Bay East on Kent County Council. Nonetheless, it was a great honour to help so many of you in this role, and I remain as a Herne Bay councillor on Canterbury City Council, where I shall continue my work as a community champion for the Bay.
I’m sure we wish every councillor - new and retiring – all the best for the future.
Public Meeting on Anti-Social Behaviour on 24th June
A lot of ASB is being committed in Memorial Park and the surrounding roads, as well as on our local shopping streets. You may have read some of the press coverage of the issue, which we recognise is causing a lot of alarm and discomfort across our community.
In response to this, Councillor Liz Harvey has set up a public meeting with Kent Police and Canterbury City Council which is open to all and where we can raise issues and suggest solutions. I will be chairing the panel discussion alongside Liz and we hope to see a good turnout from residents, businesses and community groups. So please do join us at the Kings Hall at 6pm on Tuesday 24th June. Further details here.
