I receive a lot of feedback from local residents on the improvements they would like to see to Memorial Park, our primary green space in the Bay. As such, over the years I have been working with both the Councils, my fellow Conservative councillors and local community groups to shape the project.

Last year we saw the playground upgraded, as well as improved park entrances and crossing points onto surrounding roads for pedestrians, cyclists and those in wheelchairs.

This year we have several further upgrades planned:

  • Tennis: the condition of the tennis courts has deteriorated so next month works start on resurfacing, new paint and nets to bring them up to good condition; also, we shall be marking some of the courts for pickleball, to cater for the growing number of people wishing to play this sport
  • Youth Zone: a new area for children and young people will be created, providing a fun area for football, basketball and other sports; it will be built in the two courts adjacent to the community garden
  • Pond: the pond is being desilted and cleaned; in addition, a new viewing platform is being installed on the southern edge of the pond, complete with a bespoke etched panel to include drawings of some of the boats of the Model Boats Club
  • Bandstand: the Council is pulling together a tender package for a coffee concession at the bandstand; it will be good to have hot drinks available in the park!

The sports provision will remain free, so that all local residents can take advantage of these excellent facilities.

I hope you are as excited as I am about the upgrades coming to us in the coming months.
