Herne Bay Conservatives Councillors with the Parking Petition at the Guildhall

Last night at Canterbury City Council’s budget meeting, your Conservative Councillor team, supported by managers from Active Life and the Kavanagh Cinema, presented 3 petitions totalling 1,700 signatures from local people. These petitions called on the Labour/Liberal coalition to back-track on the huge hikes in Herne Bay parking charges they are planning from April.

While we have been able to secure continued free parking from 9pm to 9am at William Street car park, we’re saddened to report that every Labour and Liberal councillor ignored the petition and voted for the massive increase in parking fees. This included Labour’s only councillor in Herne Bay, Tom Mellish.

These increases in parking charges will be harmful to businesses and residents alike, and show that the Labour/Liberal coalition is not listening to local people. We are disappointed not to have secured concessions on the major increases, but we thank you for your support of the petition, and we will continue to press the Council to reverse the hikes at the first available opportunity.

February 2025

In another success for our campaign, the Council has backed down on the further increases it planned for all car parks from April 2025. Thanks once again for lending your voice.... people power!

December 2024

Good news! Following our ongoing campaign, Canterbury City Council has U-turned on the Herne car park on School Lane. As such, it will be greatly reducing car parking rates in the new financial year.

Thank you to the many residents who added their voice to the campaign and achieved this success. We hope to be able to achieve cuts in parking rates at other car parks across Herne Bay in the months and years ahead.
